Who Needs An Auger?
Posted: Feb 26, 2024Monday morning at the resort. Mike Grady one of our awesome guests and friend has come up to work on "his dock" at Eagles Nest. Mike loves coming back in the summer and seeing the projects he has helped with in action. Mike helped us last spring rebuild all the little boat docks at the beach. We appreciate his help and all others who like helping out. In April we will have projects and spring clean up going on. If anyone wants to help out and get a cabin to enjoy get ahold of us. It will be weather dependent. Beautiful weather in April will bring out the paint brushes as well. We have a couple of people on our list, the more the merrier.
Here is the dock taken apart. Steve and Troy had to sink the supports before Mike got here. This dock will stay in year round
Steve did not have an auger to put hole in the ice so......
No Auiger, no problem. Get out the chainsaw
Luckily the temps have cooperated keeping the ice stable. We have some melting Monday and Tuesday but Wednesday looks really cold
We have gotten up all 40 maple taps. We have had 3 runs so far. A run means the temps were right for a few days of the trees running. They shut off when temps get to cold. Typically we go through 5 or more runs. The break between runs allows us to catch up and cook down the sap collected before the next run. Typically our maple season runs a month or so. So far we have kept up cooking down, which is good considering we do not have any snow banks to stick a garbage can storage container in. The sap has to be kept cold once it runs out of the tree. A buried garbage can in a snow bank is our go to fridge. Our first batch is about to be cooked down into syrup. I typically cook about 3 batches down during the season. We learned once, when we did it all in one batch what can go wrong. We had bad sap on our last run and it ruined an entire season of maple syrup when we added it together. Now it is smaller batches. Our house has a constant maple syrup smell in it at the moment. It beats wet golden retriever
Our spring rates have started. Cabins start at 160/night. Nightly openings up to June 8th and cabins open again starting August 10th for summer
